Taraniya Thera

Taraniya Thera：1．Taraniya Thera．-An arahant．In a previous birth he took the Buddha and his monks across a river which was in flood．Thirteen kappas ago he became king five times under the name of Sabhogavā （Ap．i．204f）．

He is probably identical with Sambhūta Thera．ThagA．i．47．

2．Taraniya Thera．-An arahant．Ninety-one kappas ago he took the Buddha Vipassī and his monks across a river in a boat．Ap．i．234．

3．Taraniya Thera．-An arahant．Ninety-one kappas ago he built a bridge on an impassable road．Fifty-five kappas ago he was a king，Samogadha by name．Ap．i．238．

4．Taraniya Thera．-An arahant．In a previous birth he was a tortoise in the river Vinatā，and，seeing that the Buddha Atthadassī wished to cross the river，he took him on his back．Ap．ii．428f．
